Actor Hugh Jackman to Host the Oscars

Hugh Jackman is hosting the 2009 Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Friday. "Hugh Jackman is a consummate entertainer and an internationally renowned movie star," said producer Laurence Mark and executive producer Bill Condon in a joint statement."He also has style, elegance and a sense of occasion.

Hugh is the ideal choice to host a celebration of the year's movies and will have fun doing it." Jackman, 40, who currently stars opposite Nicole Kidman in Australia, previously hosted the Tony Awards in 2004 and 2005. Ratings for the Academy Awards have slowly been tanking.

Last year's show, hosted by The Daily Show's Jon Stewart, fell to an all-time low, averaging a 10.7 rating in adults 18-49, down 24 percent from last year.
